Introduction to Rhodes
Our first holiday in Rhodes / Rodos exceeded our expectations, the weather was perfect, we found the island enchanting, the locals warm and friendly and the food excellent. This together with so many sights and activities to keep us busy, we wondered why we had never visited Rhodes before!
Rhodes / Rodos is the largest of the Greek Dodecanese Islands, and lies between the Greek island of Crete and Turkey in the Aegean Sea, a branch of the Mediterranean Sea. Named the Sun Island or Island of Light there are hardly any days when the sun doesn't shine. With its subtropical climate and over 320 days of sun per year you can be guaranteed a good tan on your holiday. Rhodes is one of the most popular holiday islands in Greece - even Greeks themselves come to Rhodes for a holiday from the mainland.
The island has a diverse landscape from rocky mountains, lush forests and olive groves, to the clear blue seas, and offers so much to a wide variety of visitors. From lazy sun drenched days to full on explorations & sports, quiet romantic evenings to buzzing night life.
If you only stray from your sun worshiping twice, we highly recommend visiting Rhodes / Rodos Old Town and Lindos.
Rhodes / Rodos Old Town is a 14th Century Medieval Town bustling with shops and restaurants down narrow cobbled lanes, and is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe currently home to over 6000 people. The old town is proud to be a recognised World Heritage site.
Lindos is one of the most popular destinations for visitors with its charming white washed townlet under the steep cliff of the ancient acropolis. The acropolis is open to the public and boasts fantastic views. Access is via a long winding path of steps, or for those who are more adventurous or wishing to avoid the climb, a donkey can be hired. The town is also known for its traditional pebbled courtyards, night life and roof top restaurants that take in the spectacular views across the town and up to the acropolis.
We hope this introduction offers you a brief insight of Rhodes, and helps you understand why Rhodes is one of the most desirable of the Greek Islands.
